Artist's Comments

There Are Some Things They Will Never Know; 18 x 24 inches, oil on canvas.

Completed July 2007.

"...Once they had purchased (the books), they took the books home, read and re-read them, cherished them, and then hid them behind the fridge, in shoe boxes in their closets, under mattresses. It was a life-changing event if a spouse, a parent, or even a child found the books and challenged the reader." -- foreword to the 2001 edition of "Odd Girl Out" by Ann Bannon

Title taken from lyrics to "Burn All The Letters" by Indigo Girls. Generation clash.

Doood...F-U-N fun to paint. Good golly some pieces I fight with over and over and some take a few short minutes. This took me 4 days of painting 2-3 hour sessions, as opposed to the 10 weeks Neglect: [link] took me (it was also 3 times this size).

"Done in a deliberately pulp style, this great painting captures wonderfully the subterfuge and excitement of the sexual awakening gay females experienced throughout the 20th century due to increasingly bold and eye opening literature. The housewife discovering herself on the kitchen floor, aware who who might discover her.. a priceless look and powerful image, humourous and empowering.. Passion is like that. It comes in a flash. I always enjoy your work.

I'm passionate about painting, but only a few of my pieces have come out like this, like I "looked" the paint on the canvas.

I wish I knew what it was that was common between them.

Thanks for your comments! :D

your work is pretty amazing. It has a very Norman Rockwell appeal
good job

I like that analogy. I wish that I could "look" certain scenes into a photograph and I am so happy when I write something that makes someone see things. I have no talent for drawing or painting and I so admire your mind's eye.

In that Norman Rockwell was just a stunningly accurate and emotive artist, I am humbly flattered beyond words.

Not *quite* the same subject matter as the majority of his stuff, but I'm honored nonetheless. He's still an influence on me.

Thank you very much for your comments.

I understand that happiness. I'm so enormously proud of this, and the other pieces that were easy for me that I'm almost ashamed of being so arrogant. Gah! So much conflict!
