Tatiyana Braves the Haunted Slave Houses After Church on Sunday by Pamela Morris., 22 x 28 in., oil on canvas. Completed April 2006.

I completed this for the Arts for the Parks competition. It was rejected. I may resubmit, but the location will be featured again this year by me.

The location is Kingsley Plantation, part of Timucuan Natural and Historical Preserve on Ft George Island near Jacksonville. The model is a tangential acquaintance through my mother. She didn't want to pose when she got there because she was scared of the houses. A month or two after I finished the piece, I spoke to her aunt and she told me Tatiyana was afraid of the people she saw - the ones who lived in the houses. I named it before I learned that.

Wow, this looks like a really interesting piece. I wish the image would full view/was a little bigger. The rafters look extremely realistic.

And perhaps in the end he had no tears to shed, but before a man comes to the point where this is so, he must have shed many.
I've had a vew other requests for larger pics, so I uploaded a larger version of Tatiyana if you would still like to see it.
That's awesome, I definitely would.

I love how you have painted the stonework so real like :) It's a beautiful piece

You non-conformists are all alike
The stonework is incredibly well painted, but it looks like you rushed a little on the girl. All in all an interesting piece, although I don't think the cabins are haunted. But then again, some people see what others don't!

Horses? People? Ridiculous Cartoons? Sure, why not?: [link]

Sizzling like an isotope.
To the haunting: It was the model's anxiety and palpable discomfort I picked up on in portraying her. Haunting may be a matter of perception: although I don't notice them doesn't mean she didn't either. Because she was able to feel that kind of anxiety in entering the cabins means that something was there at least for her.

Interesting comments on the stonework vs the girl. I'm always interested in knowing how my pieces appear to others. I appreciate it.

That's really interesting. I really love when an emotion can translate onto the canvas. ^_^
