Neglect; 30 x 40 inches - oil on canvas.

Completed June, 2007.

There's something inviting about this image. This house served as a backdrop in another of my paintings "Storm Warning" [link] (I changed the color of the house and it's the side instead of the front).

I think the subject of old buildings, cars, and human-made things is overdone, but to me this image seems more than that. The only new thing in good condition in this image is the flag. The image runs parallel to the state of my country right now. It seems the structure is in disarray and our attention is being redirected to the flag. I often find myself depressed about how off course my country has gone within the past 7 years. It has so much promise.

No empire or civilization lasts forever. But it is indeed sobering to watch it being hastened along to its demise.

This painting took me about 10 weeks to complete.

Liking the realism of the painting and the message behind it. Good job!

Gosh, the distinction between the shadows and the light in this one is excellent, I really love your style...the colours are so vibrant. You really have some good ideas in your pieces. Keep up the good work.

Truly awesome. It says something about this country being the richest in the world and still not able to take care of its most needy citizens. Sure, have the free market, but does that mean those who do not benefit from it deserve to live in squalor?

It's difficult 1. to continue feeling patriotic when your country does awful things, and 2. weed out the awful things to focus on what the country was intended to become, instead of what it has, hoping for and perhaps working toward regaining that vision again.

Thanks so much for your comments!

Your gift is your application of shadow and light in your paintings. All of your paintings look like photos. Now, I don't know if you take that as a compliment, but trust me when I tell you it is meant to be the best compliment ever.

I will graciously take that as a compliment. I do use photos as references and I take most of them myself (or my partner does). The finished paintings aren't quite like the photos, but I do like the play of light and I tend to exaggerate some features that I think are more attractive and inviting.

And I very, very much appreciate that you like the painting. Thank you!
